OTD #Duns John Anderson and Janet Watson were irregular marriage, however ‘it being represent’d that said Janet Watson was married before and that her husband went abroad some some years ago and also [?] talked to one Charles Atchison who is newly come from abroad asserts that the said Janets husband was alive when he came from Flanders last.’ Both are called to the Kirk Session. John Anderson and Janet Watson compeared and confessed they were married at Lowick. The Session asked what grounds she had to think her husband dead ‘answer’d that he went abroad in 1699 and that she never heard him save once which was in June 1700 And in the year 1703 and the Officers in Colonel Lauders Regiment came over for recruits (in which regiment her husband was) that she went to the said Officers and enquired for her husband Joyhn Rayly and all of them declared he died of a flux in Flanders’. {The issue of communication, remarriage and women left alone}.
